Burgatory was great! It is much better than Brgr, which I also tried recently. We went yesterday evening – I know it’s popular right now and I wanted to avoid the wait, we still waited about 35 minutes and it was PACKED.

I ordered sangria because all of their drinks are made with fresh ingredients. It could have been good, but it was watered down (I’m in law school – maybe I just drink too much.) Anyway, my fiancé had the caramel pretzel milkshake. It was sweet, salty, and amazing – probably the best milkshake I have ever had. I had shake-envy and quickly ordered the smore milkshake (we agree to never order the same things so we can try more things), it was also one of the best milkshakes I have ever had, but significantly sweeter than my fiancé’s choice. The milkshakes really are heavenly, as described – but filling. They use their own homemade vanilla bean ice cream.

We ordered sriracha wings as an appetizer. I make my own sriracha wings and I made them really hot, but these were not really hot at all – they were kind of sweet and sour with scallions and sesame seeds. Really tasty, but probably wouldn’t order them again.

The best part about Burgatory is being able to build your own burger – you just check off what you want on a little sheet of paper. Their meat is organic and hormone free, which is especially appealing to me. You can get also get crab, a veggie burger, sausage, chicken, or bison. I chose peppercorn crusted beef on a brioche bun with horseradish cheddar, cabernet sauce, and mushrooms (basically their Morty’s steakhouse burger minus the onions and with mushrooms.) It was phenomenal – the burger was nicely sized, it wasn’t disgustingly greasy, the flavors were great (especially loved the peppercorn crust), the bun was fresh – easily one of the best burgers I’ve ever had in a restaurant. My fiancé had bison with an egg and I’m not sure what else, but he said “mine is better than yours” and went back to eating.

Burgers are served with russet and sweet potato chips ($1 extra for fries), which were tasty and appreciated because there is no way I could have eaten fries.

The service was a little slow, but it really was packed – so I didn’t really mind.

Hope you give Burgatory a try and enjoy it, just be prepared to wait – they will text you when your table is ready though.

Drover's Inn, Wellsburg, West Virginia

Hi. My name is Katie Lane, and I love hot wings. (That’s pretty much what I write on this blog every week.)

My love affair with hot meat began about fifteen years ago at a place called Drovers Inn in my hometown. After swim meets or football games, family and friends would crowd into the rustic restaurant, and devour baskets upon baskets of hot wings and cheese fries. I didn’t know then that I was eating the best wings money can buy…I just knew that I loved them and I wanted, no, NEEDED more blue cheese. I still considered Drovers a treat in college, when my new friends and I would leave campus and go out for wings and beer. Even now, I live 60 miles away and I still make a special drive to West Virginia to get my fix. This is exactly what I did last weekend, when I gathered some old high school friends (and my dear, Ryan), and we met up at Drovers Inn.

The standard dinner at Drovers Inn includes wings, seasoned fries with cheese, and bleu cheese on the side. (Sure, you could get a cheeseburger, but why would you?) What kind of wing sauce would you like? Are you a mild, medium, or a honey BBQ kinda person? Or is your middle name Danger? Choose from hot, atomic, suicidal, or HURT-ME. Hurt-me is by far the hottest wing sauce I’ve ever tasted anywhere! My middle name is Moderately Troublesome, so I order hot or atomic sauce. The hot sauce packs a lot of heat, but still tastes good, as opposed to being overwhelming and tasteless.

We didn’t have to wait too long for our food, and once it arrived, silence fell over the table. Actually, the only sound to be heard was the dull thud of empty chicken bones hitting the bone bowl. Meat! The wings arrived steaming hot, and the cheese blanket on the fries kept them nice and insulated, too. The thick, greasy (not too greasy) hot sauce is made smoother with the chunky homemade blue cheese. Take a seasoned cheddar steak fry, dip it in the wing sauce at the bottom of the basket, then hit the blue cheese. There is nothing better in the whole entire world. I like to pair a Sam Adams Lager with this meal, though on this occasion I went for a couple Guinnesses. My friends drank Yuengling, Sam Adams Winter Lager, Miller Lite, and Dr Pepper. (Hey, we gotta get home somehow. Thanks again, Ryan!) Tony, Ashley, Bri, Ryan & I had a fantastic time, drinking and talking and eating meat off of bones. It wasn’t weird at all.

We asked Tasha, an awesome server and old buddy, to snap a photo for us. Though the restaurant was very busy, she happily helped us out. (Thank you, as always, Tasha! You rock!) Of course, I couldn’t finish my whole meal, but that’s all part of the plan…I usually order more than enough food at Drovers, that way when I come back to Pittsburgh I have leftovers for a few days. I know it’s unlikely that some of you ‘burghers will make the drive to Wellsburg (it’s about an hour away), but it’s totally worth it. You may recall from my bio that my hometown didn’t have a whole lot going for it, except a couple of great restaurants like Drovers Inn. Come on, just look at us. We’re practically glowing with post-meaty happiness. Drovers is the best!

The Pleasure Bar, Bloomfield

The Pleausre Bar, Bloomfield

After browsing through our reviews at Pittsburgh Hot Plate, I noticed that we have been lacking in reviews of Italian restaurants! We have done several pizza reviews (thanks Katie Lane) but have yet to let our readers know what we think of local Italian fare.

Well, that’s all about to change, because we did venture out to Bloomfield in search of authentic Italian cuisine. There are so many restaurants in the Italian section of Pittsburgh that it can be difficult to choose just one. We narrowed our search down to a few local spot,s then ultimately chose a small place by the name of The Pleasure Bar. It’s not exactly Italian sounding right? Well, we found out that prior to being the Pleasure Bar it was called Marianni’s. Apparently some new owners decided to change the name to lure more customers in the doors.

We arrive shortly after 6pm, and were led into a private dining room in the back of the restaurant. Along the way we passed a large bar, and another dining area to the right. Our seating area was nice- very clean with colored carpets, several tiffany lamps, tablecloths, and black cloth napkins… so far so good. Our waiter arrived, took the drink order and was off again. By the time he arrived with our beverages, we had decided on entrees: Eggplant parmesan, Chicken Parmesan, two bowls of Wedding Soup, Pesto Pasta, and a fresh Mozzarella and Tomato Salad. I also ordered a dinner salad with bleu cheese. “Sir, would you like fries with that Chicken Parm?” What??? Fries with Italian food? That’s like ordering pizza at a Chinese restaurant. We waited over 20 minutes for our salads to arrive, which was a drag because I was famished. The greens were fresh, and the tasty bleu cheese dressing was home-made. The salad was also topped with black and green olives, tomatoes, and shave parmesan cheese. The soup was average. Fresh bread and butter were also served.

Our entrees arrived two minutes after we had finished our salads and soup. The portions at The Pleasure Bar are very large, so you may want to consider sharing an entrée. The Chicken Parmesan came with a thick layer of melted cheese on top, and plenty of red sauce. The breaded chicken was tender and fried golden-brown. The French fries were heavily seasoned, and crispy. Pesto Pasta was next… the sauce was bright green and fresh- very tart, and full of garlic, cheese and pine nuts. It was a good dish overall, but the pasta was overcooked. Eggplant Parmesan is one of my favorites. This entree is similar in preparation to the Chicken Parm, but doesn’t have the heavy layer of melted cheese on top. The eggplant was thinly sliced, deep fried, and covered with tart tomato sauce. The portion was enormous, and we ended up taking more than half of it home. Fresh mozzarella and tomatoes are always nice on a hot summer evening, and this dish didn’t disappoint. The cheese was soft and smoky, and the tomatoes were dark red, meaty, and full of summer zest. The only downside; there were too many scallions on top.

The Pleasure Bar is a nice place to eat. It’s a family oriented spot with soft music, and a friendly atmosphere. The food is pleasant, but lacks authenticity at times.

Entrées are between $12.00 and $15.00.

Happy Cooking!

Mullaney’s Harp and Fiddle, Pittsburgh, PA

Mullaney's Harp and Fiddle, Pittsburgh

I CAN’T believe I had never been to Harp and Fiddle before! I’d always wanted to go, but somehow, I never made it down to the Irish pub in the Strip District. Finally, Saturday night (afternoon), Ryan and I met up with John and Dana and friends and had a ROWDY time.

Ryan and I arrived at 4:30pm. The Michael O’Brian band was scheduled to play at 9pm, and we wanted to be sure to get a good seat. (Yes, I had made reservations. Yes, we started drinking that early anyway.) By the time John and Dana arrived, we were already three pints of Harp ahead. We really enjoyed our “Reserved” sign…they mispelled my last name! Chifers?! Funny! (Sorry for the blurriness of these shots. Blurry=fun!)

We decided to begin with a couple of Small Plates: the Pesto Chicken Flatbread and the River Shannon Salmon Sliders. The first appetizer was a crispy flatbread (still not sure how I feel about “flatbreads”) baked with spicy basil pesto, grilled chicken, soft mozzerella, and plum tomatoes. The salmon sliders were adorable tiny salmon burgers with cabbage, tomato, and a drop of wasabi aioli. The four of us agreed, the apps were great starters!

For dinner, I enjoyed the Roscommon Reuben although I regretted ordering turkey instead of corned beef. Ryan surprised me and went with the Blackened Swordfish Sandwich. Aside from having the coolest name, the swordfish sandwich was excellent! I am so proud to report that the food at this Irish pub lives up to my expectations! John enjoyed his Guinness-battered Fish & Chips. Dana’s Shepherd’s Pie was served with a layer of wild-looking onion crisps on top. Beautiful!!

After dinner, like any good Irish folk, we were ready for shots! My friends introduced me to “Baby Guinnesses” which in fact contain no Guinness whatsoever. A teeny-tiny shot of Bailey’s Irish Creme is topped with a “head” of Kahlua, and the end result is a tasty Irish shot with a coffee aftertaste.

After a couple of those shots, and of course a few more pints (I moved on to Smithwick’s, then Guinness), Dana and I thought that the most effective way of getting the boys to get us more shots would be to chant “BABIES! BABIES! BABIES!” Once the guys realized that we wanted more shots (and not actual children), they were happy to oblige. Man, baby guinnesses are so much better than real babies.

Right about now, I would like to refer you to my DISCLAIMER: there may be inaccuracies in the rest of the story due to me being HAMMERED. Hopefully, my gracious friends will be so kind to fill-in-the-blanks in the comments!

As soon as we entered Mullaney’s Harp and Fiddle, I noticed that almost ALL of the tables in the restaurant were already reserved, and most were parties of eight or more! Shortly before 9pm, the restaurant swelled with an enthusiastic crowd! I had never heard of the Michael O’Brian band before, but as soon as they began testing their instruments in their Steelers t-shirts and traditional Irish kilts, I knew I would love these two guys.

Right away, they got the crowd laughing and drinking with some traditionally raucous Irish cheers! They had their own pints of Guinness up on stage and they encouraged, no taunted the crowd into keeping up with them! (More on that later…) The music really was beautiful, the lyrics sometimes raunchy and sometimes meaningful, and the beer…the beer was going down just a liiiittle too good.

Babies! Babies! Babies!

After the first set, I introduced myself to the band. I’m not really sure what got into me (ahem), but I wanted the band to know how much fun I was having and that I would put in a good word for them on my blog (ahem). My dearest pal Brianna and her buddy Josh joined us, and at that point, I was officially in heaven. Good buds, good beers, and good music.

After a few more hours of drinking and singing, I was ready to go. As my head drooped in sleepiness, I asked Ryan to take me home. At the same moment, the band began looking for me. “Where’s Kate?” they asked the crowd. “Let me see yer pint!”

Oh. No.

So, I held up my pint glass that held exactly one last swig of beer. I had one foot out the door.

“Oh, no. That’s no good! Here ya gooo…” And the Michael O’Brian Band shared their Guinness with me. A whole pintful.

Then, they declared to the entire room, that they were going to sing a song, and everytime they hit the chorus, I (ME, Katie) had to take a drink of my beer. By the end of the song, I had to have the beer GONE.

I am a little bit proud and a little bit embarrassed (mostly proud) that I finished that pint in that three minutes. In fact, according to eyewitnesses, I was drinking during the song, even when it wasn’t the during the appropriate chorus! I am counting on you, Ryan, John, Dana, Brianna, and Josh, to fill in the rest of this story as it actually happened. Because Lord knows I slept the whole way home…
